Glide Power (in photo) was one of two fillies trained by Jan Johnson who swept the two divisions of the Delvin Miller Memorial Trot on Friday night at the Meadowlands. Springtime Volo took the first $146,250 split in 1:53.2, upsetting Ultimate Cameron, and Glide Power won the second in 1:53.4.
Springtime Volo, a daughter of Classic Photo and Hambletonian Oaks champion Silver Springs, won her split by coming from behind after Ultimate Cameron set fractions of :27.1, :56 and 1:25. With George Brennan in the sulky, Springtime Volo sprinted to the front in the homestretch to win by 1 3/4 lengths, with Bone A Fide taking third and Ultimate Cameron holding on for third.
"The race went exactly like I thought," said Brennan. " I knew I had to leave out of there if I had any chance of winning the race and I was able to get around the one and two [IPO Blue Chip and Religious]. I was able to slip out in the last turn and just wear them down, which was
really good. I felt pretty confident making my last move. I didn't know how much the five horse [Ultimate Cameron] had left but I knew I was going to give a good run at the end." Owned by Kentuckiana Racing Stable and Jorgen Jahre, Springtime Volo has now won two of four starts this season. Glide Power, with Brennan again handling the driving assignment for Johnson, controlled her race, cutting the mile and winning by two lengths over Behindclosedoors, with Bramalea Hanover third. Fashion Feline broke stride at the start and finished last in the field of eight.
Glide Power is owned by Elbridge T. Gerry Jr.and Diamond Creek Farm. The daughter of Yankee Glide has three wins in four starts this season, all at the Meadowlands.
"I didn't mind that I was able to rate my own fractions after that [taking the lead] and she trotted off willingly in the end," Brennan said. "She did everything I asked her to do. She still felt pretty
good [in the stretch, so I had enough of a jump on him [Mike Lachance and Crown Laurel] where I did feel okay. [I urged her] a little bit and she was a little tired after that first quarter, but she's a professional racehorse and knows how to win."
