Juanita back on winning track in DSBF

Return Home
June 23, 2008 | Print View

Jim Morand and Nanticoke Racing's Juanita ($2.10, Morand) got back on track Sunday, one week after suffering only her second career defeat in 15 starts, with a 2:00 triumph in one of four $20,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) stake eliminations at Harrington Raceway for 3-year-old trotters.

Juanita, a CR Commando filly, made a quarter-pole move to the front and opened up seven lengths on her competition to the wire. She has now won 14 of 16 career starts and banked nearly $300,000. While Morand co-owns and drives the filly, Les Givens conditions the talented sophomore.

In the first leg on June 15, Juanita made an early break and although she recovered and still won the race, she was disqualified for causing interference.

In the other filly division, 1-to-9 shot Commando Queen was upset by Jane Dunavant's Koala Kat ($8, Tony Morgan) who led wire to wire in 2:00, while Commando Queen finished second.

On the colt side, Brandon Givens and Walter Blacharski's Man of Science ($2.60, Givens, 2:01.1) and John Lohnes and Joann Looney-King's China Road ($28.80, Eddie Davis Jr., 2:01.1) each were victorious. (Harrington)
