In a $27,200 division of the Maryland Standardbred Race Fund for two-year-old trotting fillies, Juanita [$4.20, $4.20, $3.20] earned her second consecutive victory over the Rosecroft Raceway oval on Saturday evening. The daughter of CR Commando, driven by Jim Morand, grabbed the top after an opening quarter of 29.4. Morand secured a confident lead, guiding Juanita through middle fractions of 1:01.3 and 1:31.1 to draw away in the stretch. The filly took a new lifetime mark with the mile in 2:01.4. Morand co-owns the winner of over $26,000 with Nanticoke Racing Inc. “Jimmy [Morand] eased her out of there,” trainer Les Givens said. “He made sure she stayed trotting.” “She’s done everything right from day one,” Givens continued. “She’s been easy to train.”
Kisses On Command [$17.60, $7.00] made up late foot in the stretch for second. Driven by Roger Plante Jr. for trainer Kay Gannon, the CR Commando filly improved off of her last effort where she broke stride at the start. Robert and Deborah Rementer of Delaware co-own Kisses On Command. Third were Taboo Yankee [$7.40] and trainer-driver Raymond Romanetti at 40-1 odds. The SJ’s Caviar filly is owned by Lori Romanetti and Beverly Jeffries of Pennsylvania. Excellent Caviar and driver John Wagner closed out the 4-3-all-all superfecta worth $26.90.
In the non-wagering races for colts and geldings, both Star Crossed and Muscles Rule trotted wire-to-wire in an impressive fashion. Star Crossed, a Donerail Colt owned and driven by Todd Schadel, drew away from the field through quarters of 30.2, 1:00.4 and 1:29.3 to win by 17-and-a-half lengths in 1:59.4. The colt, racing for a purse of $12,700, is trained by Roger Hammer. Bettis, reined by trainer David Wade, finished second with a trip along the rail, while Prophecy, driven by Roger Plante Jr. for trainer Neal Ehrhart, was third. In the $12,500 division, Muscles Rule held strong through fractions of 30.0, 1:00.1 and 1:29.0. The Muscles Yankee colt, driven by Todd Schadel for trainer Roger Hammer, won by over four lengths in 1:58.2. Hammer and Frank Dettore co-own Muscles Rule. Second under the wire were Northern Fleet and driver John Wagner. Trained by Manley Brown, Jr., the colt made up lengths in the stretch with a 28.4 last quarter. Seven Bends, another trainee of Manley Brown, Jr., finished third under the guidance of driver Vic Kirby. Live racing resumes this coming Tuesday at 5:35 p.m. (Rosecroft)
