Legal Justice was a repeat winner while Ashton Seelster posted an upset win in Friday night’s second leg of the Youthful Pacing Series for 3year-old colts and geldings at Woodbine Racetrack.
Ashton Seelster surprised with a 1:52.1 victory in the opening $25,000(C) split for driver Jody Jamieson. The son of Camluck - Angelina Seelster got away second from post one and followed Lil Bit Lil Bit all the way before tipping out in the stretch to win going away.
Totally Empressive rallied for the place spot while Lil Bit Lil Bit had his win streak halted at five while landing the show spot. Ashton Seelster, who was making the jump off from n/w 1 company, returned
$22.40 in the upset victory. Although he was overlooked by the wagering public, trainer Terry Deters wasn’t as surprised by the win.
“We felt he would race well and he’s much better than his previous record showed,” he said. “He’s had some immunosuppression issues--internal things--but we’re making progress with them. We’re possibly not all the way with him yet, so there might be room for even more improvement. He’s a good one.”
Ashton Seelster has now won two straight and improved his bankroll to just over $27,000 for owner Mac Nichol of Burlington, Ont.
Legal Justice followed up on his win last week to capture the second division for driver Sylvain Filion in 1:52.1. The gelded son of Western Hanover-Catch A Wish sat third for much of the mile and found
clearance at the top of the stretch where he was able to overtake Willies Place with Vroom Hanover closing for the show spot. Despite having won two straight in the series, Filion believes there might be room for further improvement next week.
“He got another perfect trip this time and it’s basically because he’s so handy to drive,” he said. “He just got running in at the end of the mile again though. Eric (Adams--the trainer) said he had a few little
issues that were bothering him and he thinks he should be even better next week.” Legal Justice returned $10 to win while improving his record to three wins in six starts this season for the Millar Farms of Newmarket, Ont. The victory boosted his earnings to just shy of $40,000.
The $60,000(C) Youthful Pacing Series final will go postward next Friday night at Woodbine. (WEG)
