At 8:40 pm Tuesday night Democratic candidate Steve Beshear, who has pledged to put referendums for gaming on local ballots, was declared the winner in the Kentucky gubernatorial race, defeating Gov. Ernie Fletcher, the incumbent. When the final votes were tallied it showed Beshear winning substantially with a 59-41 percent advantage.
Beshear, who served as Kentucky's lieutenant governor during the Martha Layne Collins administration 20 years ago, campaigned for expanded gaming, saying revenues could be used to supplement the budgets of many state needs, such as education. Beshear led throughout most of the race and was expected to be elected.
