Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear’s efforts to end Republican control of the state’s Senate were advanced on Tuesday when Democrat Robin Webb narrowly defeated a Republican in a special election for a vacant seat. Republicans now hold a 20-17 margin in the State with one independent member.
The special election for the vacant seat was called in July, the same day Republican Charlie Borders resigned his Senate seat to take a Beshear-appointed job on the state Public Service Commission.
Earlier this year Beshear, a Democrat, put forth a plan for slots at the state’s racetracks, but it never made it out of committee. Senate President David Williams, a Republican, has been adamantly against an expansion of gaming in the state.
