Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has created a task force to study the future of horse racing, and The Red Mile's Joe Costa is one of the task force members.
According to a July 25 story in the Lexington Herald-Leader, Beshear said he gave the task force "...a broad charge of looking at the health and the future of horse racing in Kentucky."
As for expanded gaming, "If they choose to look at expanded gaming, they can," said the governor.
In an executive order, Beshear told the task force to study the economic soundness of the industry, drug testing, and the role of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.
Tracy Farmer, a Thoroughbred breeder, will chair the task force. Also appointed are Robert M. Beck, chairman of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and a former attorney for the Lexington Trots Breeders Association (previous owner of The Red Mile); Bob Vance (secretary of the state's Public Protection Cabinet); Nick Nicholson, president and CEO of Keeneland; Brian Lavin, a real estate developer in Louisville; Ron Geary, owner of Ellis Park; Steve Sexton, president of Churchill Downs; Dr. Robert Lawrence, former director of the Equine Industry Program at the University of Louisville; Edward Bonne, an equine attorney; Duncan Pitchford, an attorney; Ellen Hesen, general counsel for Beshear; and Red Mile CEO and president Costa.
