The special election in Kentucky for a seat that the horse industry was hoping would go to a Democrat has instead stayed in Republican hands. Republican Jimmy Higdon defeated Democrat Jodie Haydon in a special Senate election on Tuesday.
The horse industry--and Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear--had hoped the seat would be won by a Democrat and thus reduce Republican control of the Senate and advance efforts to put video lottery terminals at the state's racetracks. Earlier this year Beshear appointed a Senate Republican from the legislative district to a judge, which opened up the seat for the special election.
The election was one of the most expensive legislative races in state history.
