Killean Acres to close

Killean Acres in Ingersoll, Ont., has posted the following on its website in announcing its closing: It is with great regret that owners Jack and Don McNiven announce, after being involved in this great industry for decades, the closure of our breeding operation near Ingersoll, Ontario. Continuing factors have forced us to make this decision, particularly the decline of prices at the yearling sales.

We find it difficult to continue Killean Acres with ongoing industry issues that never seem close to being resolved. These include the use of illegal medications in race horses, the conflicts between OHHA and Ontario tracks and the decline of the industry in general; all weigh heavily on us.

There seems to be an inability or reluctance to help improve the industry as the “every man for himself” attitude stands in the way of positive and proactive change.

The first phase of the closing of Killean Acres will be the sale of our broodmares racing stock and the “North Farm.”

The Killean Acres broodmare roster consists of 20 mares whose offspring have earned nearly $9 million, 46 with records of 1:57, 26 with records of 1:55, and 11 with records of 1:53.

The "North Farm" consists of 67 acres (47 acres with 4 board oak fencing) is also for sale. 20 acres are currently rented. The property includes a 15 stall barn (stalls are 12 x 12) and a house with 2 apartments.
