Kilowatt fillies take two Indiana Sires Stakes divisions

Indiana Sires Stakes action kicked off Monday, July 27 at Indiana Downs with four divisions for freshman pacing fillies. Favorites prevailed in two of the four $25,000 contests, with driver Peter Wrenn steering two winners.

 

Bluebird Regal, from the first crop of Third Straight, earned a 1:57.4 victory in the opening division Monday. Driven by trainer Dan Shetler, the filly got away last from post eight. Shetler moved the favorite first up and slowly advanced to fifth by the three-quarter-mile marker before pacing home in :28.4 to win by three-quarters of a length. Hana Bluegrass (Wrenn) finished second and Straitequilanite (Mark Graber) raced third.

 

Owned by Paul and Phillip Svehla, Bluebird Regal is perfect in two starts, winning her debut at Balmoral Park in 1:56.

 

Dr. Luel Overstreet’s Fakeutu Bluegrass captured the second $25,000 division with a dominating front-end performance for Wrenn. The Dorunrun Bluegrass filly stopped the clock in 1:57.1, finishing a length and a quarter in front of Kilowatts Fantasy and Jay Cross. Miss Sweetness, driven by Ricky Macomber) were third.

 

Bred and owned by Overstreet, Fakeutu Bluegrass is trained by John Merkel. The victory was the fourth of the season for the filly. She possesses earnings of just under $30,000.

 

The first upset of the evening came in the third division as Townline Kenya and Wrenn outpaced Scruuppti and Trace Tetrick in 1:56.4. Only a half-length separated the two Kilowatt fillies at the wire, with Mark Hipsher’s 12-1 shot taking the top spot over the favorite. Precious Gracie and Brad Hanners were third to complete the sweep for the sire.

 

The Hipsher trainee earned her first pari-mutuel win in her first attempt. The filly had competed on the Indiana fair circuit previously, winning twice.

 

Kilo Dream, driven by Brandon Bates, won the final, and fastest, ISS division with a 1:56.1 performance Monday. The Kilowatt filly, trained by Karlee Roach for owner Bernard Brown, finished nearly two lengths in front of Sara’s Lucky Charm (Shetler). Hoponit and Don Eash secured a third-place finish.

 

The victory was the first for the filly, out of Electric Yankee mare Artbeat’s Yankee.
