Syl King Jr., who has been racing at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs since its opening in 1965, will be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 11-race program Friday afternoon.

A native of Honey Brook in Chester County, King began his career in the sport of harness racing at the age of 15. He started working as a groom for Jake Mersky and 10 years later went on his own.

King ranked among the top 10 drivers and trainers at Pocono Downs during those earlier years. He was the leading UDRS percentage driver in 1977 with a .407 mark.

His career wins are nearing the 2000-win plateau with earnings over $5 million. King has campaigned at every track east of the Mississippi.

Helen’s Partner, an open pacer, is one of the top horses King has conditioned over the years. Helen’s Partner raced at Pocono Downs in the 1980s.

Some of the notable trotters that were developed by King include Med Vac, now a 5 year old with a 1:52.2 record and earnings of $776,185, Mr. Muscleman, with a 1:51.1 record and earnings of more than $3 million and Napoleon, with a 1:59.1 record and earnings of $184,793.

Annually, King breaks in 40 two year olds during the winter. Big in stature, he is highly regarded by his friends as a gentleman and kind and loyal man. (Pocono Downs)
