March 02, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Delaware horsemen Robert Kinsey Sr. and his son, Robert Jr., pleaded guilty in Common Pleas Court Tuesday to animal cruelty charges. The elder Kinsey admitted he beat a horse onthe head and face with a shovel after it kicked his wife, Louise, on the leg last June. The younger Kinsey admitted he punched that same horse.

In addition, the elder Kinsey was fined $500 and ordered to pay prosecution costs, undergo a mental health evaluation and serve six months unsupervised probation. The younger Kinsey was fined $250, ordered to pay court costs and serve six months unsupervised probation.

According to Delaware's The News Journal, people convicted of cruelty to animals are barred from owning an animal for five years, but the Kinseys received an exemption from that prohibition, which is available to defendants who derive at least 25 percent of their income from the sale and resale of animals.

Following the incident, the elder Kinsey was fined $500 and suspending for 10 days, and the younger Kinsey was fined $100, by the Delaware Harness Racing Commission.
