Chili NZ wore down pacesetting Jate Daniels to take the featured pace at Scioto Downs on Saturday night in 1:54.1. Favored Just Pretend A finished third.
Jeremy Smith sent Jate Daniels to the front at the start of the race, using his inside post position to put his rivals in the hole behind him. Driver Kyle Bolon moved Chili NZ to the outer tier approaching the half-mile marker and Jeff Nisonger put Just Pretend A on his back.
Chili NZ forged his way to the front by the three-quarter pole and paced away to win by 2-1/2 lengths for owner Joseph Muscara. Jate Daniels held off Just Pretend A to save second place.
Virgil Morgan trains the winner, who paid $6.20 to win. Chili NZ is a 6-year-old sired by In The Pocket. (Scioto)
