Knockout blow in Mich.?

Return Home
December 09, 2004 Send To A Friend  | Print View

In an interview published in Thursday's Detroit News, Michigan racing commissioner Robert Geake said that the passage of Proposal 1 in the Nov. 2 election "was just about a knockout blow for horse racing in Michigan."

The passage of the proposal requires statewide and local voter approval of any new gambling operations, including the addition of slot machines at racetracks.

Geake has four applications to build new racetracks in the state, including one by Magna Entertainment to construct a $100 million dual-breed facility in Romulus, near Metro Airport. Geake said he has plans to meet with Magna officials next week to discuss its intentions of continuing forward with that plan.

In a press conference the day after the election, Magna CEO Jim McAlpine stated the company was still looking at proceeding, but that "we're some way away from...making a decision to complete that project."
