KYSS trots to Dancing Filly, Body Surfing, Wizard Time, Shaman

The story of the Kentucky Sire Stakes championships for trotters turned out to be a trainer-driver-owner-sire combo, a maiden win for a Kentucky-bred, owned and trained horse, and a placing to give a defending champion a second championship.

The KYSS championships, worth $300,000 each, were held at The Red Mile Sunday night.

The trainer-driver-owner combo was Kevin Thomas, Ron Pierce, Bulletproof Enterrprises, and the sire Like A Prayer, as all were responsible for 2-year-old filly trot winner Dancing Filly and the 3-year-old filly trot champion Body Surfing.

Dancing Filly picked up her third win in four career starts with her 1:57.2 score from post 10. Body Surfing started from post eight but also wasn't deterred from her outside starting slot, trotting to an easy 1:56.2 score over Annie Hall.

In the 2-year-old colt trot, Wizard Time pulled off a huge upset at odds of 54-1, breaking his maiden in 1:57.1 for owner-breeder-trainer Peggy Grant of Lebanon, Ky. Grant had finished fifth in the 3-year-old filly trot with Royal Garland, but was totally shocked by Wizard Time, who Trace Tetrick drove to the score.

Shaman Hall, who won the 2007 two-year-old colt, picked up another Sire Stakes championship, but this time he needed the help of the judges. The pacesetting Hartmann, who was stung hard through the third quarter, broke stride at the wire, which caused the judges to elevate Shaman Hall from second to first.

Mike Lachance drove Shaman Hall for trainer Rolf Ebener and owner Klaug Ringl. The Like A Prayer colt picked up his third victory of the season and earned a new lifetime mark of 1:55.3.
