Laddie turned in one of his most impressive efforts of the season to capture a $130,000 Ontario Sire Stakes Gold Final for 3-year-old colt trotters in a stakes-record equaling time of 1:54 at Woodbine Friday night.
Driven by Paul MacDonell, the son of Angus Hal -Victory Dreamer converted off a pocket trip and was able to nail pacesetting Arch Madness right on the wire for a nose decision.
Arch Madness, who was coming off a recent second-place finish behind Donato Hanover in this year’s Kentucky Futurity, overcame an outside post-10 start and cleared to command well past the first quarter of :26.4. Laddie had also left alertly from post seven and was tucked in second as the field trotted past the half in ::56. San Pail made the first-over challenge out of third as the field approached the third panel and idled up to the leader at three quarters in 1:26. Meanwhile, race favorite Flirtin Man was stymied in traffic eighth on the outside.
After a middle half in :59.1, the top two were able to sprint clear of the field with the final outcome still in doubt until the closing strides. San Pail managed to hold the show spot with Flirtin Man making up almost five lengths with a :26.4 sprint through the stretch to pick up fourth.
The victory was the fifth in 14 tries this season for Laddie, who is trained by Paula Wellwood.
This was the final OSS Gold event of the season for the 3-year-old trotting colts. Laddie will be one of the 10 finalists eligible to the $300,000 Super Final, which is scheduled for Nov. 10 at Woodbine.
Another 3-year-old colt trotter turned in a 1:54 victory on the Woodbine card. Windsun Lane, a Lindy Lane colt making just his second start for trainer-owner Rick Zeron, was put on the point for Zeron and trotted to a 1:54 tally, giving him a new lifetime mark.
