In a thrilling photo finish, 27-1 shot Lanson ($57.20) nosed out Misterizi and Enough Talk in the $123,000 Su Mac Lad final Friday night at the Meadowlands.

Driver Mike Lachance and Lanson sat third behind favorite Enough Talk as he led the field through fractions of :28, :56.3 and 1:24.3. Enough Talk appeared to be on his way to victory until Misterizi tipped off cover and quickly swallowed up ground. But it was Lanson who was fastest off all in the sprint to the wire. Lachance angled Lanson out and he responded with a :27.4 final quarter to collar the leaders. He trotted the mile in a career best 1:53.

“The way he raced (in the preliminary legs of the series), he was always strong at the end,” Lachance noted. “We had the outside post, the best two horses were on the inside and I knew I was going to have a decent trip. I was able to get out at the top of the stretch. The horse can finish his mile and he’s honest. It was just a lucky trip. I was just hoping to be in the first three by the top of the stretch, but at the wire, he was gaining pretty fast.”

Royal Wire Products’ Lanson has now won 10 of 29 starts and $200,991. Don Swick trains the 5-year-old son of Self Possessed.
