Lantern Kronos trotted the fastest mile by a 3-year-old filly in 2008 in winning the first of two divisions of the $236,700 Bluegrass on a cool Friday afternoon at The Red Mile, while Dancing On Stage won her first race of the year in the second split, springing a 54-1 upset.
Driven by trainer Jimmy Takter in the $117,800 split, Lantern Kronos led gate to wire to score in 1:52.3, lowering her own previous national season's mark of 1:53 set Aug. 29 while winning the World Filly Futurity at Du Quoin, Ill.
Takter and Lantern Kronos took control in the first turn over her six rivals, with a behind-the-gate break by Stage Show essentially turning the race into a six-filly affair. Lantern Kronos led through fractions of :27.4, :56.1 and 1:25.1 as Poster Pin Up sat second and Celebrity Tribute third.
Midway through that final turn Tim Tetrick pulled Celebrity Tribute from third to make a bid but the effort was futile as Lantern Kronos easily held off her rival. Epangeline closed late for Ray Schnittker to take third-place honors.
The win was the 11th of the year in 14 starts for Lantern Kronos, a daughter of Viking Kronos. She is a full sister to the international champion Going Kronos. Lantern Kronos is owned by Falkbolagen Ab of Malmo, Sweden.
In the second $118,850 division, driver Tim Tetrick worked out a second-over trip with Dancing On Stage, who rallied down the stretch to win in 1:55.3. Recent Moni Maker winner Diana Hall was second for Ron Pierce, with Kiss The Dice and Brian Sears third. Hambletonian Oaks winner Creamy Mimi, racing from behind early, closed late but could only muster a fourth-place finish for Andy Miller.
Jim Campbell trains Dancing On Stage, a daughter of Broadway Hall out of the Giant Victory mare Giant Step. She is a homebred of Arlene and Jules Siegel. A three-time winner in 10 starts last year, Dancing On Stage took nine starts in 2008 to find the winner's circle Friday.
