Jimmy Takter moved Lantern Kronos to the top just past the opening quarter of :28 after leaving from post seven and went on the rest of the way to a measured victory in the first $61,740 elimination of the 44th Kentucky Filly Futurity for 3 year olds Friday afternoon at The Red Mile, while One Tough Lass surged from the back of the pack to take the second elim for Tim Tetrick.
Lantern Kronos was the 1-9 favorite in the first eight-filly elim and she reached the wire first in 1:54.4 as she easily held off the bid of runner-up Bella Dolce and driver Paul MacDonell, who edged Diana Hall and Ron Pierce.
The recent winner of the World Filly Trotting Derby in Du Quoin, Ill., Lantern Kronos won for the 12th time in 15 starts this year, increasing her career earnings to more than $900,000. Takter also trains the filly for owner Falkbolagen Ab of Malmo, Sweden.
Also returning for the second heat are the fourth and fifth-place finishers, Poster Pin Up and No Pain No Gain, respectively.
Shortly after the race, Takter announced he would not be starting Lantern Kronos in the second heat, and although she drew post two as one of the two elim winners, she was scratched.
One Tough Lass rallied late to take the lead in midstretch before going on to the 1:54.4 victory, with Epangeline and Ray Schnittker taking runner-up honors. Classic Lane was third for David Miller, with Creamy Mimi and Morguns Sweetheart also earning a spot in the second heat.
A daughter of Muscles Yankee, One Tough Lass is trained by Ross Croghan and owned by Jon Erdner and William Neumeister. The win was her third straight as she increased her earnings to more than $181,000.
