Latest Desire, Dedi's Dragon win Elevations

Return Home
September 15, 2012 | Print View

The 2-year-old pacing colts Latest Desire and Dedi's Dragon took different routes to the Indiana Downs winner's circle Saturday night. The first $89,600 division was won by Latest Desire and Ron Pierce in 1:53.2, with Pierce finding daylight along the pylons and his charge sprinting past Real Rocker just before the wire. Dedi's Dragon cut the pace in his $90,600 division and stole a :30 second quarter before hitting the wire in 1:52.2.

Also on the card were two divisions of the Kentuckiana Stallion Management Stakes, with purses of $118,500 and $117,250. Carol's Desire took the first in 1:53 for trainer Ron Burke while the Tony Alagna-trained Nikki Beach won by thee lengths over stablemate Donna Lee in 1:52.1.

As for the colts, Latest Desire started from post one but Pierce allowed Peter Wrenn, with Kentucky Sires Stakes champion Duel In The Sun, and Blue's Rocket Man to get in front of him in the first turn. Blue's Rocket Man was the leader at the quarter in :28.2, but then Wrenn sent Duel In The Sun to the front and they controlled the middle portion of the mile with splits of :57.3 and 1:26.2. Modern Cruiser and Ricky Macomber Jr. launched a first-over challenge and Tyler Smith followed with Real Rocker. Real Rocker tipped clear in the homestretch and took the lead, but Latest Desire's quick speed caught him in the closing strides.

Latest Desire, a colt by Real Desire bred by Fair Winds Farm, is trained by Nick Giberson and owned by the Illinois group of Newcom, Taylor and Moats. The colt is undefeated in his only two starts.

Dedi's Dragon, a colt by Dragon Again trained by Ron Burke, seemed a sure winner when driver Matt Kakaley stole a second-quarter breather of :30 (after :27.2 to the quarter and :57.2 to the half). His stablemate The Pan Poobah sat on his back and that's where they finished at the wire. Twilight Bonfire, driven by Pierce, challenged and pulled alongside in the last turn, but couldn't sustain his threat.

Dedi's Dragon, the 4-5 betting favorite, picked up his third win in eight starts this season.
