Lather Machine unleashed a track record and career-best mile of 1:50.1 to capture the $27,250 final of The Battling Brad late-closer series Sunday at Harrah’s Chester. Under the guidance of driver Tim Tetrick, Lather Machine capitalized on an early break by The Real One And Only to capture the lead just past the first quarter, which was clocked in :27. From there, the 3-year-old gelding raced through a pressured half-mile in :54.3, put away The Real One And Only nearing the three-quarters in 1:22.1, and drew away to a 3 1/2-length victory.

“The trip wasn’t exactly as I planned,” said Tetrick. “I was worried about getting around him (Real One and Only) and then having him on me the whole time. But it worked out to my advantage.”

Lather Machine is a 3-year-old gelded son of Badlands Hanover. He is owned by Gary and Barbara Iles and trained by Bobby Clark. His time of 1:50.1 was the fastest ever by a 3-year-old gelding at the Chester oval, and established a new lifetime mark. Sent off at favored odds of 4-5, Lather Machine returned a win mutuel of $3.80 to his backers.

“He’s just a nice colt,” said Clark. “He started out the year real good, but he got a little sore. We gave him some time off and he’s come back to be the horse we thought he could be. He’ll continue racing at Dover and then we’ll give him a little time off. He’ll be back racing at (Harrah’s) Chester next summer.”

Realiscape finished second. Pilgrims Raindrop was third. (Harrah's Chester)
