Laugh A Day dies

Return Home
April 13, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Laugh A Day, the most expensive yearling filly ever sold at public auction, died April 3. The 23-year-old mare died shortly after she foaled a Badlands Hanover filly at Winbak Farm in Maryland.

In 1983, Lloyd Arnold bid a record $625,000 to buy Laugh A Day, a daughter of Most Happy Fella out of Tarport Cheer. The price is still the highest ever paid for a yearling filly pacer.

Though Laugh A Day never achieved the level of success racing as her pedigree suggested, she took a qualifying record of 2:02f at two, and then a race record of 2:00.1f at three, earning $38,555.

As a broodmare, Laugh A Day's top performer is her 1995 Life Sign colt, Strong Life, a 1:50 pacer with earnings of $305,065. From her 11 previous foals, Laugh A Day also produced Matt's Dude, by Matt's Scooter, who took a 1:52.2 mark; Catch A Way, a 1:54.1 filly by Beach Towel; and Outright Happy by Artsplace, p,2, 1:55.3.
