In a photo finish, Lavec Dream ($41.80) nosed out Muscles Marinara for the win in the $50,000 opening round of the Su Mac Lad Series on Sunday afternoon at the Meadowlands. CR Dream Catcher closed along the pylons to finish third.
The only mare in the field, Lavec Dream made a three-wide move at the half and hustled home in :27.3 to win in 1:53.2. Driven by George Brennan, she recorded her first win of the season and surpassed the $300,000 earnings mark.
The 6-year-old Enjoy Lavec mare has now won 13 of 73 career starts for owner and trainer Peter Kleinhans. Last season, she captured the $100,000 Miss Versatility at the Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds and finished second in the $250,000 Classic Series final.
The first major stakes race of the season in the trotting free-for-all ranks, the Su Mac Lad Series continues with a second leg next Sunday and concludes with a $110,700 final on April 15. (Meadowlands)
