The ninth race in the 2010 European Grand Circuit series, the Hugo Åbergs Memorial, named after the founder of the Jaegersro track in Malmo, Sweden, has always been a magical event, and this year's race, held Tuesday night, was no different.
On a beautiful summer night in the south of Sweden, trainer-driver Lutfi Kolgjini enjoyed great success by winning the race in front of his hometown crowd.
Kolgjini's ticket to the winner's circle was Lavec Kronos, a 5-year-old stallion by Enjoy Lavec-Dame Lavec (Quito de Talonay-Kit Lobell). He has recently been competing against the European elite and he proved in Abergs Memorial that he definitely belongs there.
Kolgjini made his usual early move and reached the front before the quarter, while favored Torvald Palema started from post nine and had traffic problems. The early speed for the quarter was in :27.2 before they slowed.
Lisa America and Irving Rivarco made early breaks and all the trotters in second tier started to tire already after the three-quarter mark was passed. Beanie MM and Premiere Steed were among those who tired, while those at the rail continued.
orvald Palema trotted strongly from behind, but had too far to come from as the leading Lavec Kronos trotted his last quarter in :27 to seal the victory. Lavec Kronos hold off for Torvald Palema' s fast finish and the inside move of Brioni and was timed in 1:52.2.
Even before he lost, the plans for a U.S. trip for Torvald Palema were canceled last weekend because his connections want to continue racing him in Sweden this summer, which a trip to New Jersey for the Nat Ray would have prevented. The next major race in Sweden is the Anniversary Trot at Solvalla.--By Lars Palm
