Lawsuit in Florida?

Return Home
May 06, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

With only today left in the Florida legislative session, the chances of passing a slots bill for Broward County are very slim. And if a bill is not passed, one of the pari-mutuel entities that would benefit from slots legislation could take the Legislature to court.

"They're going to end up with a lawsuit," Daniel Adkins , vice president of Hartman & Tyner Inc., owner of Hollywood Greyhound Track, told the Sun-Sentinal. "The way things are going, we're not going to have a choice. I don't want to go to court. I just wish the Legislature would act on the will of the voters."

Earlier in the week the House voted out its bill, which contains a 55 percent tax and allows only bingo-style machines, which is unacceptable to the pari-mutuel industry. The Senate, which has favored a lower tax and Las Vegas-style slots, postponed consideration of its bill Thursday.

Governor Jeb Bush, who along with other Republican leaders, has not been enthusiastic about the expansion of gambling, nevertheless wants to get a bill passed. "I think it would be great to get that done," he was quoted as says Thursday.
