LBJ winner wins first since Delaware score

The 2006 Little Brown Jug winner Mr. Feelgood won his first race since capturing the pacing jewel, reaching the wire first in a division of the William Penn late-closing series Sunday at Harrah's Chester Casino & Racetrack.

Mr. Feelgood had been retired following his sophomore season to Brittany Farms but was returned to the races after breeding 31 mares. Trainer Jimmy Takter qualified the now 4-year-old son of Grinfromeartoear twice before sending him to Chester for the Penn Series. He finished fourth in the opening leg and second in the second round before winning Sunday in 1:51.3. Driven by Tim Tetrick, Mr. Feelgood was the betting choice in all three of his Chester attempts.

Tetrick also won Penn divisions with Third Day (1:51.4) and and Lucky NZ (1:52.1). Doggone Incredible and Eric Goodell won the other division in 1:52.

Odds-on favorites were upset in all three divisions of the Commodore Barry late-closing series.

Eagle Real One ($23) braved a first-over trip to overtake 1-2 public choice Tiger Tinch in the final strides of the first division, stopping the timer in 1:52. The 4-year-old son of Dragon Again settled in fifth early, allowing the dust to settle before making his move.

After settling in third past a quarter of :27.3, Tony Morgan sent Tiger Tinch to take the lead, going to the half in :55.3. First-over across the bridge, Eric Goodell steadily advanced Eagle Real One up the backstretch, within a neck of the leader at a three-quarter split of 1:24. Tiger Tinch initially responded to the challenge, drawing clear by 1 1/2 lengths at the head of the stretch, but Eagle Real One dug back in, prevailing in the final strides.

The second division saw Tiber Hanover ($5) draw clear of 4-5 favorite Poker Dice through the stretch, prevailing by a length in 1:52 after sitting well off the pacesetters.

Mister Mystic N (Goodell), Poker Dice (Tim Tetrick), and Bret�s New Journey (Tim Curtin) all were aggressive from race�s beginning, drawing five lengths clear from the rest of the field. Winning driver Jim Meittinis rated Tiber Hanover well behind fractions of :27.1 and :54.1 before steadily advancing up the backstretch with the 3-year-old Cam�s Card Shark gelding. Tiber Hanover overtook a tiring Mister Mystic N through the far turn after three-quarters in 1:23.1, and continued to draw clear, holding off a late challenge from Southwind McGraw (Jack Baggitt Jr.).

Mighty Young Joe ($8.20) and trainer-driver Stacy Chiodo took the third division, barely beating Dark Sign (Tetrick) at the line in a 1:52.1 mile. Dark Sign, favored in the wagering at 2-5 odds, got away third, pulling through the first turn and taking the lead at a quarter of :28, then leading the field through middle fractions of :56.1 and 1:24.4.

Tracking a respectable pace, Chiodo tipped out from third with the gelded son of Blissfull Hall before entering the far turn, and pressed leader Dark Sign to the top of the stretch, at which point Dark Sign began to widen his lead. The ever-tenacious Mighty Young Joe dug back in through the final strides, closing in a final quarter of :27 and eking out a nose victory. (with files from Harrah's Chester)
