Leading X Ample dies

August 25, 2006 | Print View

Leading X Ample, a 4-year-old stallion by The Panderosa, died early Friday morning at the veterinary hospital at Purdue University in Indiana. Leading X Ample was stabled near Balmoral Park, where he was to race Saturday in the American National, when he was stricken.

“He apparently was in shock when he arrived at Purdue,” said Peter Heffering, a partner in the Leading X Ample Stable with Alan Galloway, Robert Hamather and Jerry Silva. “They really haven’t been able to tell me any more than that. They’ll be doing an autopsy.”

Leading X Ample had been trained this year by Bill Elliott. Earlier this year he won the $650,000 William R. Haughton Memorial at the Meadowlands. He had earnings of $531,765 this season, which boosted his career bankroll to $1,149,279. He also took his lifetime mark of 1:48.2 this year.

Leading X Ample was bred by Robert Hamather. He is out of the Artsplace daughter Lady Shania and his second dam is Hamather’s stakes-winning filly No No Abby.

“He was a horse we were hoping to stand at stud at some point,” said Heffering. “It always seems to be the good ones that you lose.”
