Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed Alan Leavitt, president of Walnut Hall Ltd., and four others to fill vacancies or expired terms on the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority. The appointees were announced Monday in a press release from the governor’s office.
Other new members include Edward “Ned” Bonnie, Foster Northrop, Elizabeth Lavin and Robert Beck Jr.
In addition to breeding horses under the banner of Walnut Hall Ltd., which he operates with his wife, Meg, Leavitt also serves as president of the Kentucky Standardbred Breeders Association and as a member of the Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council. Leavitt replaces Ken Jackson of Kentuckiana Farms, whose term has expired. Leavitt’s term expires Jan. 6, 2011.
Beck, who will serve as chairman of the Authority, is an attorney at Stites & Harbison in Lexington. He is founder, director, and president of the American College of Equine Attorneys. Beck has represented many equine businesses over the years, including some in harness racing. He serves as counsel to Horseman Publishing Company, owner of The Horseman And Fair World magazine, and for many years was counsel to the Lexington Trots Breeders Association, owner of The Red Mile and Tattersalls.
Bonnie is a retired attorney from Frost Brown and Todd, where he served as a counsel for equine law. Northrop is a veterinarian specifying in equine practice for Cheney & Northrop in Lexington. Lavin is secretary and treasurer of Longfield Farm.
