Kentucky-based Standardbred horseman Dr. Andy Roberts received a big boost in his campaign for state Senator on Tuesday when the Lexington Herald-Leader gave its endorsement in an editorial in the newspaper and posted online. A Republican, Roberts is running in the state's 12th District that includes The Red Mile and Keeneland against incumbent Sen. Alice Forgy Kerr.
The winner in the May 18 Republican primary will then compete against Democrat Don Blevins on the November ballot.
The Herald-Leader editorial noted in part: "Roberts, like many in the horse business, is concerned that Kentucky's signature industry isn't getting a fair shake from the Senate's Republican leadership which has blocked expanded gambling at the racetracks.
"Roberts could be an independent thinker and a breath of fresh air in a Republican caucus stultified by Senate President David Williams' iron rule."
