The Lou Guida-owned Lisa America, driven by Torbjorn Jansson, wore down the favorite Torvald Palema to win the Sundsvall Open at the Bergsaaker track in Sweden on Sunday. The 5-year-old Varenne mare's time was a mile rate of 1:56.1 for the 1 5/16th mile distance. The time set a record for the age group for the distance (2,140 meters).
Lisa America was parked throughout, racing third-over before Jansson sent her on a three-wide move to get alongside pacesetter Torvald Palema. Lisa America overtook Torvald Palema in the stretch drive and then held off Beanie MM.
Lisa America's victory was worth about $140,000. The mare is trained by Jerry Riordan in Italy.
