Ten of the best aged pacers collided in the C$737,000 Canadian Pacing Derby Saturday at Mohawk and Lis Mara proved to be on the top of his game as he won his second consecutive Total Truth went straight for the lead and was relentless, parking Tigerama to a blistering :25.3 first quarter. Boulder Creek settled in for a pocket trip from the ten hole and Lis Mara got away fifth. Brian Sears pulled Lis Mara third over, using Mister Big as his cover and followed him three wide around the last turn. Turning into the straightaway, Lis Mara proved his prowess and shot to the front to win by a length and a quarter over Mister Big and Dave Miller. Boulder Creek and Daniel Dube finished third with Lis Mara, a five-year-old Cambest stallion, is the first horse to win consecutive Derbies since Indian Fleet did in 1987 and again in 1988.
Going to the post as the favorite in every single start can be a daunting task but Lis Mara has fulfilled many expectations in 2007, having now won eight of his 13 ’07 starts. He is trained by Erv Miller for MJG Racing Stables Inc and Louis Willinger. “He raced great tonight, we’re thrilled with the victory,” said driver Brian Sears. “I knew they were racing pretty hard in front and I was able to get Dave (Miller and Mister Big) in front of me and I knew he was going to have to come eventually and I figured he’d take me right where I needed to go.”
“It’s a real long, hard season and to keep one sharp week in and week out is very demanding on the horses. But this horse shows how tough he is…He is definitely a great horse.”
