Pacing champ Lis Mara and owners MJG Racing (Mike Gulotta) and Andy Willinger have teamed up to help horses in need through the Standardbred Retirement Foundation (SRF). Lisa Mara, the incredibly fast, award-winning pacer and his very generous owners are helping the SRF introduce its new Owner’s Percentage Program.
The program encourages owners with horses racing in New Jersey to donate any percentage of their horses’ or stable winnings to the SRF to help them continue their mission of caring for unwanted or non-competitive Standardbreds. Gulotta and Willinger have pledged a percentage of all purse money won by Lis Mara this year to the Foundation and are encouraging other owners and trainers to join them.
“I believe that everyone who has benefited from racing owes it to the horses to give something back,” said Gulotta. “The Standardbred Retirement Foundation has been there for our sport’s horses for 18 years. They do fantastic work and have found homes for thousands of Standardbreds. I want them to be there for at least another 18 years. Without the Foundation, what would happen to the horses? Lis Mara is a great horse and we are having a wonderful time with him. We are happy that he can help other, less fortunate horses.”
All licensed owners in New Jersey will soon receive a form in the mail asking them to join the Percentage Program. By simply checking a box and returning the form, the designated amount of horse or stable winnings will be deducted from purse money and donated directly to the Foundation. The Meadowlands and Freehold are the racetracks currently participating in the program.
The Standardbred Retirement Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization founded in 1989. It is harness racing’s oldest, most successful award winning program of its kind. SRF has completed over 2,000 adoptions, and is currently caring for 140 horses awaiting homes. For more information call 732-462-8773 , email Gen@srfmail.comor visit the website www.Adoptahorse.org.
