Lis Mara cruised home in :26.2 to win the $42,000 Open Pace in 1:48.2 Saturday night at the Meadowlands. Driver Brian Sears raced him off the pace until just past the half and then put him into the first-over position.
Lis Mara steadily picked up ground and with just one slight tap of the whip pulled away from Roddy's Bags Again and sealed a :26.2 final quarter. Boulder Creek was third.
The 1-2 betting favorite, Lis Mara was making his first start this season after an astounding, 10 3/4-length, 1:49.1 qualifying win at the Meadowlands on April 19.
Erv Miller trains Lis Mara for MJG Racing Stables Inc. and Louis Willinger. The 5-year-old Cambest stallion was bred by Yonkers Raceway president Tim Rooney, who also bred Lis Mara's dam, Lisheen, a daughter of Abercrombie.
Last year Lis Mara won 10 of 17 starts and earned $967,485.
