Little Miss K injured

November 23, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Little Miss K, a top contender in the Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Filly Pace, shattered the small pastern bone in her right front leg Wednesday morning. The Artsplace filly's racing career is over and her owners hope surgery is successful to save her life.

Mike Gulotta, whose MJG Racing Stable shares ownership of Little Miss K with Craig Lipka's Hill View Enterprises, said the filly trained a mile this morning, but after she stepped off the track she stopped and picked up her leg. The severity of the injury caused the filly's trainer, Erv Miller, to take her to the New Jersey Equine Clinic, where renowned surgeon Dr. Patty Hogan examined her.

"She's in a splint until Monday," said Gulotta. The surgery will be done at (the University of Pennsylvania's) New Bolton Center. Dr. Hogan wants her to have surgery there because they have a pool and that can keep her from further injury after the surgery.

"Her racing career is definitely over," conntinued Gulotta. "My primary concern is for the horse's welfare. I would have liked to win a Breeders Crown, but the horse's welfare is first."

Gulotta said Miller was confident Little Miss K was in perfect health and ready for a big mile in the Breeders Crown. "I talked to Erv this week and he was very confident she was going to win. He said she would mow them down."

Now Gulotta will be cheering for another pacing filly trained by Miller, the 3-year-old Restive Hanover. "I'll be going to the winner's circle to congratulate them if Restive wins," he said.
