Liz, Chiptoria Secret win series legs at Meadows

Roughed up going to the quarter, Liz showed her speed and moxie in capturing her fourth straight victory Wednesday at The Meadows in a division of the Mary Wohlmuth Memorial Series for freshman filly trotters. Chiptoria Secret took the other $12,000 split in the series' second leg. The $20,000-added Wohlmuth final is set for next Wednesday.

Liz, the 2009 Pennsylvania Stallion Series divisional champion, was parked out from post seven before making the front, a signal to challengers that she might be vulnerable. But under Mike Wilder's urging, Liz thwarted the first-over bid of Miss Poinsettia and held off the late rally of Gold Strike to prevail in 1:59.4. Gold Strike was a half-length back in second while Miss Poinsettia saved show.

Hammered down to 3-5, Chiptoria Secret catalogued her fifth win in 18 career outings with a strong uncovered bid for Dave Palone that carried her past the game leader, Chivas Regal, in 2:01. Chivas Regal was a head back in second, with Nine Gold Coins a non-threatening third.

In the $27,500 Preferred Handicap Trot, 4-5 favorite Master Begonia enjoyed a relaxing second quarter in :31, then sped off to score in 1:55.2 for Palone, trainer Ron Burke and owners Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. Wind Surfer was second by a half-length while Hidden Viggorish, tiring after an uncovered bid, finished third.

It was the 10th victory in 16 starts this year for the 6-year-old gelded son of Master Lavec-Shimma Begonia and one of six winners on the 16-race card for Palone. (The Meadows_
