Loch Katrine upsets in PASS action

Loch Katrine upset a pair of bigger names to highlight Pennsylvania Sire Stakes action for 3-year-old fillies on the trot at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on Friday afternoon.

There were four divisions held at Pocono on Friday. It was the third of four legs for the trotting fillies, leading to the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes Finals in September.

Loch Katrine was overlooked at 6-1 in a division which included an even-money favorite, Harbour Belle, coming off a W.N. Reynolds Memorial Stakes win at Pocono, and Undercover Lover, the Pennsylvania 2-year-old trotting filly champion last year. Those two big guns raced first and second until the stretch.

That’s when both started to falter, leaving the door open for Loch Katrine and driver-trainer Ed Lohmeyer to rally three-wide. The filly finished strongly to nip Pembroke Spice at the wire, in 1:56.4, for her first win of 2007. Tsarina finished a close third.

Loch Katrine’s 1:56.4 winning time was matched as as fastest Sire Stakes win of the day by TS Fast Forward, who went gate-to-wire for driver-trainer Rick Beinhauer. KC Cool Caviar closed for second, with Fuego third. TS Fast Forward has four wins in nine starts this year.

Daliance picked up her maiden-breaking win in the day’s opening division. The filly had not won in five career starts, but she comfortably overcame an outside post to go all the way on the engine. Cat Manzi did the driving for trainer Randy Beeckman, as Daliance came home in 1:57. Indy’s Lindy was far back in second, and Sudden Susan got the show.

In the final split, trainer-driver Jan Johnson and Bluer Than Blue sweated out a win in 1:57.1. The filly led all the way, but had to hold off the hard-charging Speedy Edie, the race favorite, who struggled to get to the gate at the start, but who made up a huge deficit to just miss in second. Beryl’s Flight was further back, in third. (Pocono Downs)
