Herb Wilson, who served as “major domo” of the log cabin staff at the Delaware, Ohio, County Fair for 52 years, died Tuesday at his son Leonard’s home in Springfield, Ohio. Wilson was 81.

“Herb will be sorely missed by all of us at the fair,” said Tom Thomson, director of racing. “He was a fixture here for more than 50 years.”

In 2004, the Delaware Fair honored Wilson in a winner’s circle ceremony.

Wilson was a U.S. Navy veteran and also was retired from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. While living in Delaware he began his 52-year career at the county fair.

“Whenever you needed something done Herb would get it done,” said Phil Terry, director of marketing for the Little Brown Jug. “He will be missed.”

Wilson is survived by two sons, Leonard Kirby and Karl; three daughters, Sharon Collier, Marsha Hill and Brenda . He was preceded in death by his wife.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Robert C. Henry Funeral Home in Springfield and services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s Baptist Church in Springfield. Burial will be at the Valley View Memorial Gardens in Xenia, Ohio.
