Rated first-over up the backstretch, Lolique ($14.80) prevailed in the $35,000 Briscoe Hanover for Open Handicap trotters on Monday at Harrah's Chester Casino and Racetrack, just holding off a late charge from Beach Nut Brand for a 1:53.4 victory.

The 6-year-old Tagliabue gelding sat well off a speed duel between Lets Get Serious N (Andy Miller) and Mireille AS (Andy McCarthy), moving to the outside just before the bridge turn and reaching midfield through a :57.3 half mile. Lolique took his time advancing up the backstretch, grinding up alongside pocket-sitter Mireille AS upon reaching three-quarters in 1:25.4.

"I don't like to get him too fired up early," said driver Tim Curtin. "He's got a real big quarter-mile brush, but you've got to ease him close to the front before he brushes."
After sticking a neck in front of Lets Get Serious N on the far turn, Curtin's biggest concern was the late charge from Beach Nut Brand (Tim Tetrick), who followed Lolique's cover for almost a half mile. "(Beach Nut Brand) was right on my helmet, and I was a little worried about him coming off the turn, because I was first-over for a long time."

The gutsy Lolique, however, prevailed by a head, holding off Beach Nut Brand in deep stretch. Lets Get Serious N faded to third.

John Wagner trains Lolique for Pamela Wagner and Scott Woogen. (Harrah's Chester)
