The 54-1 Waipawa Lad N won the $32,500 Delaware Special Handicap and the 16-1 Victor Vuitton N took the $22,000 winners-over pace, two of the President's Day features at Dover Downs on Monday.
Brad Hanners and WJ McDougall Racing's Waipawa Lad N followed the cover of dueling leaders Domitian Hanover and Ron Pierce and Proper Respect with Tim Tetrick around the final turn then came three wide to outleg a trio of rivals at the wire in 1:53.3 to win for the first time of the new year. The win was Hanners second as the Peter Tritton-conditioned Waipawa Lad N paid $111.40 for a $2 ticket. Kelly's Spur rolled down the passing lane to finish second in front of Domitian Hanover.
One race later Corey Callahan won his fourth of the day driving Winordietrying to victory in 1:53.3 to win the $24,000 four-year-old pace. In his first start since being claimed by Nick Callahan, Winordietrying, an Allamerican Native-Armbro Jillian gelding, won for the third straight time and fourth in his last five outings. Everlasting Pride raced gamely for Pierce to finish second after racing head to head with third-place finisher Yankee Fortysix and Brad Hanners battling for the lead from the backstretch to deep in the lane.
George Dennis pulled Victor Vuitton N out of third after the three-quarters and then wore down leader That's Justice with Vince Copeland in deep stretch to score his second straight victory in 1:52.1. Don Reed and trainer George Wagner own the veteran Dream Away-Paris Affaire gelding. Dollars Bromac N and Pierce were third. (Dover Downs)
