Northfield Park Wall of Fame inductee Elbridge Moxley of Westfield Center, Ohio, and Boca Raton, Fla., died Saturday, March 27, at his home in Florida. He was 96.
Mr. Moxley's early professional business career was forged with his uncle at Earl Gibbs Automobile Agency, and later he and his brother, John, founded the Medina Supply Company which grew to become one of the pre-eminent cement and ready mix companies in Ohio. In the 1960s, Mr. Moxley and Amos Mears formed the Medina Development Company which developed industrial lane in Medina. Mr. Moxley was instrumental in the construction of the Brunswick Laurel Square Shopping Center during that time.
Mr. Moxley greatly enjoyed his 50-year involvement in Standardbred racing, including his extensive participation as an owner in the county fair and Grand Circuit of racing. As owner of Moxley Meadows Farm, Mr. Moxley had the unique distinction of seeing his illustrious broodmare, Jane Brewer, produce some of the finest progeny in the Standardbred world at the time. In 1993 he had the honor of being inducted into the Northfield Park Wall of Fame. A special thanks goes to trainer-drivers Earl Bowman and William Popfinger, who had long-lasting relationships and friendships with Mr. Moxley for 40-plus years.
Mr. Moxley also served for many years on the Medina County Fair Board. He was a long-standing member of the Medina Chamber of Commerce for which he served as president for two terms and was inducted into the Chamber's Hall of Fame in 1979. The Medina Community Hospital Board, of which he was a life partner, acknowledged his fundraising efforts. He was a lifetime member and elder of the Medina and Brunswick Christian Churches and was recently honored with the construction of a Memorial Pavillion on the Medina Christian Church grounds.
Mr. Moxley is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Janet; daughters Nancy (Thomas) Cummins, Jane (Thomas) Smith, Linda Moxley; stepdaughter Lisa Polo and stepson Brad Polo; granddaughters Jamie (Silas) Coffelt and Julie Dandaneau; four great-grandchildren; niece Mary Ellen Gibson; and nephew Edward Moxley.
A private burial will take place at Medina Spring Grove Cemetery. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
