Lotteria held in Naples, Italy

May 02, 2010 Send To A Friend  | Print View

There were three eliminations, all three with Italian-breds in top, but a little bit of American blood was needed to win the 498,000 (euro) Lotteria on Sunday in Naples. The winner was Italiano.

Pietro Gubellini sent Irving Rivarco to the front in the final, when most of the other serious challengers got traffic problems during the way. Italiano had the best of trips in the pocket and when others tired at the top of the homestretch, the Gaetano di Nardo-driven Franco-American got the chance and finished rapidly to an easy victory. Irving Rivarco was second ahead of Irambo Jet and Ilaria Jet.

Italiano is a son of the French sire Giant Cat and out of Coming up Cash (Baltic Speed - Casino Evil). He’s trained by Claus Holmann and is owned by the consortium of Scud. Ucci Riccitelli Srl and was bred by Alain Roussel in France, but was registered in Italy.

The winner earned 203.000 euro and more than doubled his lifetime earnings (about 150,000 euros).

As for the eliminations, Indy Kronos (Malabar Man-Twiggy FC) continued his winning streak and made the elim his seventh win in a row for Enrico Bellei. Indy Kronos was timed in a rate of 1:55.1 over 1,600 meters. Italiano (Giant Cat) was second and the 2009 winner Island Effe (Lemon Dra) third.

The nice 6-year-old Italian-owned mare Ilaria Jet (Pine Chip), trained in France by Fabrice Souloy, was the favorite in the second elim and won after a tough trip outside the leader for Jean-Michel Bazire. She won in a rate of 1:55.3 and was followed across the wire by Leben RL (Supergill) and Irambo Jet.

Irving Rivarco (Ganymède) was a wire-to-wire winner in third elim for Pietro Gubellini, timed in a rate of 1:56.2.--By Lars G. Palm
