Lou Pena barred at Yonkers Raceway

Return Home
July 31, 2011 | Print View

Trainer Lou Pena has told harnesslink.com that as of Aug. 4 he will be no longer permitted to race his horses at Yonkers Raceway, a track where he dominates the standings. Second in the North America standings in wins (435) and earnings ($5.8 million), Pena said he was told by Yonkers Raceway Steve Starr that the decision to bar him "was in the best interest of harness racing."

“I felt sick in my stomach when secretary Steve Starr told me to go. I couldn’t believe it," Pena said. "None of my horses have ever returned a positive. But I guess Yonkers being a private track they can turn away who they want. I felt like an orphan on the street when they gave me no reason whatsoever. They just said you just gotta go."
