March 17, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Loyal Opposition was the best of the mares in the $50,000 Overbid while Bono Bests extended his winning streak to four and Cactus Creek pulled off an upset in the Matt's Scooter Series Friday night at the Meadowlands.

Loyal Opposition, driven by Andy Miller and trained by Erv Miller, followed Artbitration into the stretch, took the lead with a sixteenth to go and held off Burning Poin for a 1 1/2-length victory in the Overbid Series for free-for-all pacing mares.

All nine mares will return for the $118,560 Overbid Final on March 24.

Loyal Opposition, two time Pacing Mare of the Year, covered the mile in 1:51.2 flat, picking up her second win in three starts this year. The 6-year-old Cole Muffler mare now has 16 wins in her last 22 starts and 46 in 76 lifetime outings. She has banked more than $2.5 million for owner Daniel Waxman.

In the first division of the Matt's Scooter, carded as the second race, Bono Bests took the lead before the half and coasted to a 1 3/4-length score over Menno Boy in a lifetime best of 1:51.3.

The winner of the Count B Series Final at Woodbine, Bono Bests victory was his fourth in a row. The 3-year-old son of Pro Bono Best now has six wins in eight starts this year and 10 in 14 lifetime efforts.

Driven by David Miller and trained by Randy Beekman, Bono Bests is owned by his breeder, Ivan Sugg, who sold a share to Blue Chip Partners this past January.

Cactus Creek, driven by George Brennan, fired to the lead off the turn for home and held on for a three-quarter-length victory over Fox Valley Cruise in the second division.

Cactus Creek, trained by Joe Holloway, paced the mile in 1:52.1, a career best. The son of Artsplace posted his second win with three seconds in seven starts this year. Lifetime, he has three wins, four seconds and two thirds from 13 starts.

The top 10 money earners in the Matt's Scooter preliminary legs advance to the $106,100 final. (Meadowlands press release)
