Loyal Opposition resting

July 19, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Breeders Crown champion Loyal Opposition will not be defending her title in this year’s $331,500 Mare Pace, which will be raced Saturday evening, July 29, at the Meadowlands. Ervin Miller, trainer of the $2.7 million-winning daughter of Cole Muffler has decided she needs some time off.

“She just doesn’t seem like she’s up to that right now, and I want to try and freshen her up, see if we can’t do a little good on the end of the year,” Miller told harnessracing.com

The 6-year-old mare has six wins in 13 starts this year with earnings of $187,123.

“I didn’t think it was that tough, but it has taken its toll on her,” Miller said of her current season.

After finishing fourth in an ICF stakes at Maywood Park June 29, Miller had her scoped.

“She had a little laryngitis stuff going on,” Miller explained. “We tried to clear that up and then start her back at Balmoral (in a Filly and Mare Open Pace July 11 where she finished third). She just didn’t start the way I wanted her to. If they don’t start here the way you want them to, then they’re not going to be any better out there (Meadowlands).”

Miller said he will see how she is in a couple weeks before looking for a next start, most likely at Balmoral.
