In the closing week of racing at Hazel Park Harness Raceway, the Invitational Handicap Trot on Friday proved to be a track record-setting performance by LT’s Best, a 4-year-old son of Davanti owned and trained by Thomas Barrett of Novi, Mich. The 1:55.1 mile is a new record for 4-year-old horse and geldings, established by Supergrit in a 1:56 performance in 1997, and also a new overall trotting record, lowering the previous mark of 1:55.2 set in 1999 by White Collar Crime. Driver Vince Copeland steered LT’s Best to victory by a neck over Benn’s Thunder, driven by Tyler Buter, closing the mile in :28. Benn’s Thunder carved out the fractional times of :28, :57.4 and 1:26.1 for owners Mike Lee, Scott Goodwin and co-owner and trainer Kelly Goodwin. Rompaway Wally finished third by half a length for owner Rompaway Farms and trainer-driver Don Harmon; all three horses in the six-horse field were race timed in 1:55.1. The third win in a row in the Invite at Hazel Park was the eighth this year for L T’s Best, setting a new lifetime record. The winner’s share of the $14,600 purse gives him current year earnings of $66,855 and lifetime earnings of $82,554. (MHHA)
