Lucky Jim extended his streak to four wins in the $20,000 opening round of the Horse & Groom Series for trotters on Sunday afternoon at the Meadowlands.
Spice Queen was first to the front, but Sauce Two K quickly headed her in a :55.4 half. Driver Andy Miller and Lucky Jim launched an attack outside but had to maneuver around the lagging One Awesome Master on the final turn before bearing down on the leader. Lucky Jim surged past Sauce Two K mid-way down the lane and drew off to a 2 1/4-length tally in a career-best 1:52.3. Shoeless White Sox picked up cover behind Lucky Jim and closed to finish third.
Lucky Jim paid $2.40 to win the fifth race, the second of the three $20,000 Horse & Groom divisions on the card. Julie Miller, Andy Miller's wife, trains the 4-year-old SJ's Photo gelding for owners David Prushnok, John Prushnok, William Gregg and Lindwood Farm. Lucky Jim is perfect in four starts this season. Lifetime, he has won six of 24 starts and $148,203. Rompaway Alvin prevailed by a neck over Wind Surfer in 1:55.3 in the first of the Horse & Groom divisions, for driver Ron Pierce and owner-trainer Peter Kleinhans. Stand Guard held off Night Of Intrigue in 1:54.2 in the third division for David Miller and Ken Rucker. The Horse & Groom Series continues with a second leg on March 8 and concludes with an $80,000 (est.) final on March 15. (Meadowlands)
