MacDonald sets mark

Mark MacDonald's win with Chianaglia in the fifth race at Flamboro Downs Thursday was his 644th of the year in Canada, breaking the all-time record. He had tied the record on Wednesday afternoon after driving four winners at Flamboro Downs but uncharacteristically went zero-for-nine at Western Fair that evening in an effort to surpass the mark.

Gaetan Lamy set a mark of 460 wins in 1990 and then two years later increased that total to 533. In 1999 Chris Christoforou raised the bar to 643 victories.

"I've been thinking about it a little lately," MacDonald, 27, told the London Free Press. "It seems to be a big thing. I never really thought about it, but it's turned out to be a big thing.

"(The record) stood for a long time and it takes a lot of work to win that many. It's something you can look back on and be a little proud of."



MacDonald has driven only a few starts in the United States, winning three times. His overall 647 victories currently ranks him third in the North America standings, behind Cat Manzi (691) and Tony Morgan (663). MacDonald's $6.7 million in purse earnings ranks him sixth.
