Machine guns down field

Pines Machine Gun upset the field at odds of 33-1 in the fifth-race trot at Pompano Park Monday, beating race favorite Erikas Message and ending his three-race winning streak. Driven by Kevin Wallis, Pines Machine Gun won by three-quarters of a length in his first start this year for owner-trainer Clay Faurot of Wixom, Mich. Me llamo Jose was third.

The race started off with Bring It Strong (John Kakaley) going to the early lead with Pines Machine Gun grabbing the two-hole trip. After the half-mile mark, Bruce Ranger came first-over with Erikas Message and they started to grind their way toward the leaders with Nomar (Tome Sells) following the outside flow.

Then, as the field started down the stretch, Bring It Strong began to fade as Erikas Message and Ranger looked to take command but Wallis found room along the rail and was able to trot on by Erikas Message to win in 2:01.2.

It was a night for underdogs as only one race favorite was able to win in the 10 races on the program.

One of those longshots was in the $6,800 featured trot as Mycenae Bluegrass at 15-1 was able to take advantage of three lead changes, raced well on the outside and then close strongly in the stretch to win in 1:58.1 for driver Richard Macomber Jr.

It was a record mile for Mycenae Bluegrass, a 5-year-old mare by Dakota Spur, who is trained by Dick Macomber and leased by winning driver Macomber. (Pompano)
