Magic in Princess leg

After getting her feet wet in the Grassroots system of the OSS program as a rookie, it is crystal clear that Magic Maverick is ready, willing and able to take her game to a whole new level this season for trainer Bob McIntosh. The homebred daughter of Western Maverick–Pan Souci turned in her fastest mile to a date, a 1:53.1 clocking, with Randy Waples at the helm to win the Princess Series split Monday at Woodbine.

Waples sat third through the :26.3 opening quarter before brushing to the lead as the field entered the backstretch. Once in command, Magic Maverick laid down easy splits of :56.3 and 1:25.3 before kicking out a :27.3 closing quarter to seal the deal.

Quail Seelster (Keith Oliver), who was sent off at odds of 77-1, came first-over and was a lapped-on second, while Checkouttheview (Chris Christoforou) tagged along to grab the show dough in the $25,000 affair.

“She’s just starting to come into her own,” said driver Waples. “She’s going to get better down the road with a few starts under her belt. I had her shut down pretty good around the turn, but she sprinted home very well. She doesn’t even wear a head check, that how good she is.”

The victory was the first of the season for the homebred filly, who now boasts career earnings of $111,201(C) for Robert McIntosh Stables Inc. and CSX Stable.

The top ten money earners from the preliminary legs will have the chance to return to Woodbine Racetrack next Monday evening for the $71,000(C) Princess Pacing Series final. (WEG)
