Majestic Son done for year

Although trainer Mark Steacy said in the Breeders Crown winner's circle that the start was likely the last for Majestic Son, he confirmed the decision Tuesday morning.

Steacy said Majestic Son, who is listed as a ridgling, would be sent later this week to Tara Hills Stud Farm in Port Perry, Ont., for fertility tests. The results of the tests most likely would determine Majestic Son’s future. He is owned by the Majestic Son Stable of Lansdowne, Ont.

“I’d like to see him race again and some of the partners are talking about racing him next year, but we’ll probably make that decision in the next couple weeks,” Steacy said. “If he’s potent we’ll have to sit and make a decision.

“If he’s going to race next year, he needs a little rest,” he added. “He’s made 19 starts; I don’t think it’s necessary for him to continue. He’s sound and came out of the (Breeders Crown) good.”

Majestic Son won 14 of 19 races this year and earned $1.2 million while racing entirely in Ontario. His victories included three triumphs over Hambletonian champ Glidemaster, in the Breeders Crown, the Canadian Trotting Classic and the Goodtimes.

He was eligible to the Matron at Dover Downs in Delaware and there was some earlier discussion of supplementing the colt to the Yonkers Trot. The total fee to supplement to the Yonkers Trot is $70,000.

“That’s a lot of money,” Steacy said. “He’s made it, but I don’t like throwing it around.”

Majestic Son won the Breeders Crown by three-quarters of a length over Glidemaster in 1:54.2 at Woodbine Racetrack on Saturday night. The two horses were separated by a head at the top of the stretch.

“You can’t really put into words it felt so good,” Steacy said. “The Canadian Trotting Classic was worth more money and was a great race, too, but you had all the hype going into this race. There were no excuses in this race; Glidemaster was right alongside us, and probably had a little bit better trip. We put everything to rest this time.” (With files from HRC)
